Company overview

Founded in 1976 by Mike Papageorge, the Helfin Financial Services Group aims to be the leading independent financial services provider in its region. Wealth management has served as Helfin’s main product offering, providing financial advice, and curating well suited portfolios to every client that walks through the door. This expertise is supported by decades of professional financial experience within the Papageorge family. In 2009, Helfin was recognized as one of the top four advisory practices in the country.

The Helfin Group is a third-generation business, with Mike’s son Michael having joined the group in 2017 as an advisor. Side by side, over the better part of ten years they have grown the firm’s assets under management to sizable levels both locally and internationally. With their model portfolios having performed attractively, they decided in 2024 to establish a fully-fledged asset manager, Helfin Global Capital. With costs and taxes being reduced for clients, as well as other frictions, they have launched four local and one offshore fund for their clients and public investors at large.

The Helfin Global Capital fund range encompasses the full risk/return spectrum and therefore caters for the requirements and risk tolerances of all clients. A central belief that anchors their investment process when managing portfolios is that capital markets are largely inefficient. As a result, a large part of their analysis focuses on fundamentals where a bottom-up approach is at the core of their decisions. Their in-house valuation models, coupled with strenuous checks, are implemented to ensure that securities are bought at significant discounts to fair value. In conjunction with their fundamental analysis, a top-down overlay is applied in order to highlight sectors, global trends and geographic regions which they believe will outperform.

Their processes for security picking filter through to their fund manager selection process for their standardised funds. Thorough meetings are held with several fund managers before an allocation is made. The investment team ensures they have a deep understanding of their respective processes making sure it aligns with their strategy. On going research is done on all asset classes to ensure that their strategic and tactical asset allocation is well positioned to outperform their benchmarks as well as their competitors. All the while being cognisant of the volatility in each fund ensuring it is at their targeted level.

Helfin aims to be a leading icon in the financial services industry as a world-class Asset Management Company in South Africa, focusing on delivering financial solutions to their growing client base with passion and integrity. By combining their investment management expertise with decades of experience, they aim to continue to offer market leading investment solutions to their investors.
