AssetMix is registered with the Financial Services Board as a discretionary financial services provider (FSP No 45719).

AssetMix Solutions (Pty) Ltd was established in April 2015. AssetMix is a boutique multi-manager business that focusses on providing discretionary portfolio management solutions to retail clients in South Africa. The AssetMix team has many years’ experience in dealing with investors and has deep insights into clients investment needs. The Chief Investment Officer, Mr Carl Victor Hugo has a technical understanding of the local and offshore markets as well as the mechanics of portfolio management.

The team, therefore, has an advantageous combination of technical expertise and insight into the end investors need. Although AssetMix only recently obtained their Category II license, the AssetMix team has many years’ experience in the financial services industry.

1968-1970: Federale Makelaars (Federale Volksbeleggings Group), Life Assurance training and Broker.

1970-1984: Willis, Faber, Dumas and Roland Insurance Brokers (later became Standard Bank Assurance Brokers). Life Assurance Broker and Employee Benefit Consultant.  President of the SBAB group sales force, 1984.

1984- 1987:  Southern Life.  Developed the “Finstat” Financial Needs Analysis software programme which was one of the first and most widely used Broker and Financial Advisor programs of its kind in South Africa at that time, with over 400 sites.

Started and ran own business from 1987, a Life Assurance Brokerage:

1987 to 1996: Key initiator, developer, chairman or managerial roles for software and rules development in Total Care Strategy Umbrella Funds Administration that led to the first- of- kind registration of Umbrella Fund Rules in 1989, by the Office of the Register of Financial Institutions.  This offered the Independent Broker an ongoing source of new business and an annuity income, whilst building a practice.

1994: Instrumental in appointment of the first independent Board of Trustees from the Accounting and Legal Professions to Privately Administered Umbrella Funds.

In 1996 incorporated the first “Multi-Manager” individual member investment option in SA under an Umbrella Fund.  Total Care Strategy was later sold to Sanlam and became Sanlam Umbrella Fund Administrators in partnership with Sanlam Employee Benefits.

In February 2001, TCS launched their unique Internet Service Site that provided advanced Administration and Information services available to Participating Employers (representing Members), Members and their Contracted Financial Advisors.

In 2005 under Derek’s leadership, Sanlam Umbrella Fund Administrators introduced a number of SA firsts, such as unique member communication structures called “Joint Forums” of elected Member Representatives at each Participating Employer fund, whom in turn, would elect 50% of the Independent Trustees onto the Boards of Trustees of their funds.

2010-2011: As Executive Consultant to Sanlam Umbrella Solutions, Derek set the benchmark “21 Important Questions” for all Participating Employers to follow when electing a new umbrella fund or reviewing an existing fund.  In 2010 and 2011 Sanlam Umbrella Funds were voted as the best umbrella funds by the Principal Officers Association. In 2011 these funds were also voted the best umbrella funds for Communication with employees, by the Institute of Retirement Funds.

Derek is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Sanlam Umbrella Funds after his retirement at the end of 2009.

Industry first: in 2010 was key in establishment of the Independent Professional Business Risk Analysis Council representing some 336 brokers.

Since 2011, Chairman of the South African Independent Financial Advisor Association (SAIFAA) and its predecessors. The association promotes knowledge, skill, compliance guidance, due diligence procedures, independent advisory support, ethics education and promotes professionalism amongst advisers.  As a result of the proposed introduction by the FSB of the Retail Distribution Review legislation in 2016, SAIFAA is preparing its members to comply with changes in the regulatory environment.

2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 facilitated SAIFAA Workshops and Conferences attended by over 800 Delegates and sponsored by Altrisk, Analytics, Momentum Collective Investments, FMI, Liberty BD, Discovery, Moonstone, Allan Gray, Coronation, OMIGSA, STANLIB, Liberty Corporate, PwC, Hollard, Element, Kasigo, Prescient, Investment Solutions and SEB/Sanlam Umbrella Funds.

2015: Co-founded and appointed as a director of AssetMix Solutions, a discretionary Asset Manager FSP Licence No. 45719.

Professional Societies and Community Service Societies:  1987: Cape Town Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) (past President). In December 1974 Derek became one of the founding members of the Claremont Rotary Club. In 1987, he joined the IPC Group of Independent Brokers which eventually became the Senate Group. He is an ex-president and is still a member.  The Senate Group educates and promotes professionalism amongst its members.

Janet Hugo – Managing Director

1987 to 2004: employed in property development, estate agency, financial newsletter and financial advisory industry.

University of Orange Free State: Studied Financial and Estate Planning and Investment Management and qualified with Higher Diploma in Financial Planning, Advanced Higher Diplomas – Investment Management, Estate Planning in 2004/2005.

2005: Accredited as Certified Financial Planner CFP® 2005.

2004 to date: Director of Hugo Capital, FSP 10537, Category 1. Broad range of investment advisory, financial planning, investment and fund management, insurance, retirement investing, employee benefit investing, wealth management and estate planning experience across most asset classes and for a variety of products, locally and offshore.   2006 to 2010:  Successfully launched and managed the Sunday Times and Finance Week Wealth Forums with Sanlam Glacier and Insinger de Beaufort as sponsors.

2006 to date:  Industry presenter and media commentator at financial professional conferences locally, London and in Australia.

2009 to date: Chairperson of The Financial Planning Institute of South Africa, Investment Management Committee. Active contributor and consulting in relation to financial industry standards.

2012 to date: Co-opted to the Media Liaison committee of The Financial Planning Institute of South Africa.

Wouter has been invited as guest speaker on Business Day TV, Kyknet TV, Summit TV, RSG Radio and various other radio stations and a guest lecturer at the University of Pretoria.

Chairman of the FPI Certification Advisory Panel, Vice-Chairman of the FPI Pretoria Regional Committee, Member of the FPI Practice Standards Working Group & Member of the Marketing and Communications Advisory Panel. Wouter received special recognition from FPI’s CEO Godfrey Nti (23/10/2014) for volunteering and voluntary contribution to help raise the level of Professionalism as well as building a strong sense of community within the financial planning profession.

Wouter is actively involved in financial literacy education   and some of them include: JSE- hare trading game-coordinator and presenter at Maragon Private Schools, My Money 123 – Course presenter to various Schools, Business and Churches, Business by the Book – Course presenter at Doxa Deo group of churches for the last 7 years and has also been invited as Guest Lecturer at the University of Pretoria.
